More than 115 years of tradition and innovation

The company founder, Johann Stiegelmeyer, produced his first wire mesh mattress bases there. He did not just make people comfortable, he also laid the foundation stone for what is today the globally successful Stiegelmeyer Group.

Today, the Group, of course, remains a family company and combines the traditional value of a healthy family operation with a lean, modern company structure.

    Establishment of the subsidiary Stiegelmeyer Oy in Finland.

    Takeover of Famed (Stolter) Company in Poland, where beds are manufactured and sold.

    With the introduction of the nursing insurance in Germany, the business field "Domestic care" is added to Burmeier Company.

    Stiegelmeyer expanded: Establishment of additional works in Herford and Nordhausen, Thuringia.

    The equipment of old people's and nursing homes began gaining more and more importance as business sector. For this reason Stiegelmeyer acquired the furniture factory Burmeier located in Lage / Lippe in 1989.

    Establishment of the subsidiary Stiegelmeyer BV, Nederlande (formerly Medical Patient Handling BV).

    For the first time beds are manufactured with lying surfaces which are made of pressure cast aluminium.

  • 1972

    22,000 beds were made for the Olympic village in Munich.

  • 1970

    Development of the first height-adjustable lifting column bed. In the 60s already Stiegelmeyer's beds could be cleaned fully automatically.

    Stiegelmeyer's infant beds meet with a high demand.

  • 1955

    Stiegelmeyer reached a leading market position. The maternity bed is a bestseller in the "hospital" field.

  • 1949

    At the end of the 1940s, Stiegelmeyer set a precedent with the first school furniture programme. Another field of products: space-saving furniture.

  • 1936

    Stiegelmeyer supplied more than 10,000 double beds for the athletes at the Olympic Games in Berlin.

  • 1924

    Apart from the metal beds and the newly added timber furniture production, the development of motor bicycles of Stiegelmeyer type (3.8 HP) started in 1924.

  • 1910

    The first hospital beds document the long tradition of Stiegelmeyer Company. A bed model from 1910 can be admired in our exhibition rooms in Herford.

  • 1900

    In 1899, the production of steel-wire mattresses started in Rödinghausen. The company was entered in the trade register on 1st November 1900 immediately after moving to Herford.
